This design implements an isolated data converter that utilizes residual power from the interface to power itself. This removes the requirement for expensive power transmission across the isolation boundary. By easily enabling the ubiquitous RS-232 connection on an electric meter, features like factory configuration and calibration can be performed by a wide range of test station hardware.
The 2.5kVRMS isolation boundary ensures that field technicians can safely connect to an e-meter, even after it is installed, to perform diagnostics, data retrieval, and field firmware updates.
The robust interface is installed, to perform diagnostics, data retrieval and field firmware updates. The robust interface is designed for data rates well beyond the RS-232 standard, to ensure that isolation will never be the limiting factor in a design.
